Viktoria Kortschmaryk-Wood
Viktoria Kortschmaryk-Wood remembers when her parents brought eight-year-old Andrew, her older brother, to the Camphill School in Donegal Springs, Pennsylvania in 1960, which later joined with the Camphill School in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, to form Camphill Special School–Beaver Run in 1963. Andy spent ten years at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills in the 1990s.
In a note about her family, Viktoria wrote about “the role the Camphill Special Schools played in our life. This incredible movement, which came over from Scotland in the late 1950s with a focus on developing a self-sustaining agrarian community to integrate disabled persons into families in a true community setting, took Andy in as their first student in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania at an estate that had been the home of a steel magnate. They did a phenomenal job helping Andy develop the skills he needed to become an independent member of the family, and in their accepting, gentle and caring environment helped Andy realize his full potential to participate in life.”
Herta Hoy remembers Andy from those years. She and Viky enjoyed sharing memories and looking at pictures of Andy when she and Robert Martin visited Viky at her home in February, 2024.
